Prepositions

Prepositions are a non-inflected part of speech. Prepositions combine with other words. Prepositions and other words form adpositional phrases. Prepositions do not function independently.

Prepositions and other words are written separately.

Prepositions are divided into two groups:

• simple prepositions, e.g.: na, o, w, z, za, ku, do, bez, pod, przed, nad, dla, między, przez, po etc.;
• compound prepositions (a combination of two simple prepositions), e.g.: poprzez, pomiędzy, ponad, wśród, obok, około, oprócz, pomimo etc.

• Prepositions indicate time relationships, e.g. o ósmej, po spotkaniu, przed śniadaniem.
• Prepositions indicate purpose relationships, e.g. iść po prezent.
• Prepositions indicate spatial relationships - location of a person or object at a given time, e.g. nad samochodem, za samochodem, przed samochodem, pod samochodem, obok samochodu, w samochodzie, na samochodzie, za samochodem.

Spatial prepositions used with an instrumental and locative

Prepositions przed, za, nad require a noun in the instrumental case. Prepositions w, na, przy require a noun in the locative case.

przed, za, nad + instrumental (kim? czym?)

w, na, przy + locative (o kim? o czym?)

Prepositions w and do used with locative and genitive

The preposition w requires in the locative case. The preposition do requires a noun in the genitive case.

w + locative (kim? czym?)

do + genitive (kogo? czego?)

Adpositional phrases

An adpositional phrase is a combination of a preposition with:

• a noun, e.g. w szkole, do pracy, o tobie;
• an adjective, e.g. za mała, z młodym, o starym;
• a numeral, e.g. po trzecie, dla dwojga, do stu;
• a pronoun, e.g. przy nim, bez niego, z wami;
• an adverb, e.g. od zaraz, na pewno, na zawsze.

Adpositional phrases are written separately, e.g. do kolegi, do pracy, na plaży, przez miasto, u was, po lekcjach, z restauracji.

Adpositional phrases with a noun

An adpositional phrase is composed of a preposition and a noun in a specific case. A preposition governs the noun case, e.g.:

Adpositional phrases z czym and bez czego

Preposition z requires a noun in the instrumental case. Preposition bez requires a noun in the genitive case.

z + instrumental (kim? czym?)

bez + genitive (kogo? czego?)

Adpositional phrases in genitive

• Proszę kotlet schabowy bez ziemniaków.
• Lubię kawę bez cukru.
• Kiedyś pojadę do Gdańska.
• Do Krakowa przyjeżdża dużo turystów.

Prepositions o, do, od…do require an ordinal numeral in the genitive case, e.g. Przedstawienie zaczyna się o siedemnastej. Sklep jest otwarty do osiemnastej. Filip pracuje od ósmej do szesnastej.

Adpositional phrases in instrumental

Prepositions z, za, pod, nad, przed, między require a noun in the instrumental case, e.g.:

• Na urlop pojadę z córką.
• Za parkiem jest szkoła.
• Zeszyt leży pod książką.
• Spędzamy wakacje nad morzem.
• Zostawił rower przed hotelem.
• Stoję między biurkiem i oknem.

Constructions of a preposition między with an ordinal numeral require an instrumental. e.g. Spotykam się z Filipem między dziewiątą i dziesiątą. Przyjdę do ciebie między drugą i trzecią. Beata ma wolny termin w poniedziałek między jedenastą i dwunastą.

Adpositional phrases in locative

Adpositional phrases in locative describe the place of action. Prepositions w, na, przy require a noun in the locative case, e.g.:

• To jest mój pierwszy dzień w pracy.
• Teraz jesteśmy na plaży.
• Przy biurku znajduje się fotel.
